Just last week I was grousing that there were no good Southern restaurants in Sacramento...and lo and behold, my friend Janine posts on FB today that there's a restaurant opening up on 6th Street (near Southside Park) that plans on serving contemporary Southern cooking. Who says the universe doesn't grant small wishes? Anyhow elated, I checked out their website, got an address (1915 6th Street) and went to investigate. Apparently, the new joint will be called, "South Restaurant and Bar," and will be occupying the building that used to house the Sacramento Tofu Company before it relocated.

The owners are a husband and wife team, Ian and N'Gina Kavookjian, who have extensive experience in the restaurant business including most recently a catering company and Eight American Bistro in Granite Bay. According to their website, they're looking to make South into an energetic neighborhood joint and serve, "...traditional family food, unpretentious, with no gimmicks, and no crazy science. At South we are not trying to reinvent the wheel, we are just trying to express 200 years of our family’s story on a 12” plate." Sounds good to me. The menu currently is divided into "new school" and "old school" dishes and shows some of my favorite Southern plates- fried green tomatoes, chicken and Andouille gumbo, shrimp po' boys, crispy fried chicken and beignets. I can't wait!

When I contacted the owners by email, I was advised that the tentative opening date is scheduled for September 10. In the meantime, you can peruse their menu here:  South Menu. It appears that South plans to be open for brunch, lunch, happy hour and dinner. ☺

- Yasushi Ueyama's popular ramen-ya, Shoki, will be opening up a 2nd location at 1201 R Street on May 3rd. Shoki II will be open for lunch and dinner, 7 days a week.

A mention of A Girl and Her Fork was made in our hometown paper, The Sacramento Bee. How cool is that?

Maybe it was because I watched the Social Network this weekend but I finally decided to quit clogging up my personal FB page with recipes, food articles, etc. and create a separate FB page for a Girl and Her Fork (thanks for the gentle nudge, Debby!). So it's all set up now...take a peek, "like" it if you like and as always feel free to give suggestions, opinions or just stop by to say hi.  -------> A Girl and Her Fork Facebook Page

The nice folks at Sacramento Magazine recently published an article about female food bloggers in the Sacramento area and yours truly was included...how about that! You can check it out on page 113 in their January issue (the Eat & Drink section), click on the photo above or follow this link:  Meet The Bloggers

Also while I'm writing, I would just like to thank my readers who post on my blog and email me; as well as my wonderful friends who comment on my personal Facebook page whenever my blog entries go up. I LOVE hearing your thoughts and suggestions.  I hope you continue to do so in the coming year.

Back in April, I moved into the place that I now call home. Next to the multi sky-lighted bungalow in East Sac that I once shared with the ex-husb; this is probably one of my favorite places I’ve ever lived. It’s a cozy, little cottage (yep, a cottage!) that shares a courtyard with seven others like it. Nestled back from the street, it’s easy to overlook unless you pass through the ivy covered front gate. From what I’ve gleaned from local historians, my serene little abode is in an area dubbed “Poverty Ridge" (ironic as there are several mansions in the area) and may have very well been a war bride cottage back in the day. If you look closely, you'll find that there are a few pockets of war bride cottages sprinkled throughout the grid and East Sac. My landlord revamped the cottage I live in by adding modern day amenities like central heat and air and garbage disposals but kept the much-desired “old-world touches” like the gleaming hardwood floors. Anyhow…lucky me, not only do I have a wonderful place to call home, sweet home but I recently discovered two Meyer lemon trees on the far corner of the grounds. So be prepared, you will probably see several posts in the upcoming weeks showcasing this wonderful citrus!

Sacramento needs another Starbucks or Peet's like a fish needs a bicycle. There's already one on every corner.

Let's support our local businesses and bring an indpendently owned coffee shop to our airport.

What a week! My friend C-Lo at One Smarmy Mama posted a wonderful blog about A Girl and Her Fork and then an email I had dashed off to the Sac Bee last week  turned up online.
